Richmond Passion Play

Passion Plays are rooted in medieval tradition and are often performed by local communities during Easter. The most famous example is held in Oberammergau, Germany, and has been performed every ten years since 1634, following a pledge to God during a plague epidemic.

Modern productions seek to immerse their audience in the drama, despair and hope. The Passion Play for Richmond in 2027 is called Something Extraordinary and has been written especially for our town and our venues. It invites audience members to consider, whatever their beliefs, that something truly remarkable happened 2000 years ago that changed the world for ever.

The churches in Richmond have come together to produce this one-off performance but they are also supported by all the talent to be found in town, including Richmond Operatic Society and Richmond Amateur Dramatic Society. Casting will take place in mid-Autumn but in the meantime costume makers, set builders and prop makers are all sought.

We also need funds. Although we are applying for grants, the local businesses in Richmond are invited to support the cost of the production, and individuals can donate via Just Giving.
